CLA PES Spotlight

Roman Zelinksy

My name is Roman Zelinsky and I am a graduating senior from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities from both the College of Liberal Arts and the Carlson School of Management. Rather than taking on a tradition college route, I decide to personalize my experience and tailor it to my own needs. I entered University in fall of 2013 with aspirations to dual-enroll in Carlson and CLA, as well as to major in finance and economics. After a semester-and-a-half of hard work and taking a mixture of business and liberal arts courses, I was accepted to Carlson and declared a finance major and an accounting major, on top of the economics major I had already declared while I was enrolled in CLA.

I am originally from Donetsk, Ukraine and immigrated to Minnesota in 1996 with my family. I grew up in Eagan, MN where I attended Eagan High School and Inver Hills Community College through the PSEO program. I have always been politically active, and passionate about business. I also enjoy keeping up with current events, following basketball, and investing in stocks.

This year, I will be working towards completing research for my honors thesis, as well as graduating in May of 2015. I recently accepted a job offer from Houlihan Lokey in downtown Minneapolis as an investment banking analyst, specializing in financial restructuring. Going forward, I am considering going back to school in a number of years to complete a JD/MBA dual degree and work in either private equity or in a hedge fund before moving on to politics and philanthropy.

Stacy Korenchen

I was fortunate enough to get accepted into the University of Minnesota. The opportunities that arose after becoming accepted made me feel even more fortunate. With my acceptance into the university I was also admitted into the College of Liberal Arts, President's Emerging Scholars (PES) program. I was living on my own for the first time in my life and my independence began to grow. As I go into my senior year of college, I look back at all the experiences I have had in the past 3 years. Meeting new friends and people, learning to live independently and becoming immersed in a whole new environment has helped shape who I am today. Out of all the changes I experienced coming into college, the best and most influential has been my involvement with the PES program. The program showed me a sense of community, gave me that extra helping hand when things seemed overwhelming and has even given me a job as a peer assistant. I will always take a piece of the program with me and hold it close to my experience here at the U of M.
